On July 4, as Americans gather to celebrate freedom, independence, and national pride, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on the powerful bond between the United States and Israel. These are two nations rooted in the fight for liberty, justice, and self-determination.
When I moved to Boca Raton in 2015, one thing became clear: if you wanted to do anything meaningful for Israel, you eventually found your way to Glen Golish and the Helping Israel Fund. Whether it was a fundraiser, community rally, or even just an idea to support Israeli soldiers, every road led back to Glen. When I wanted to organize an event for the Lone Soldier Center, local rabbis simply said, “Call Glen.” It might have seemed strange at first, but I quickly learned why.
Glen isn’t just involved. He is the mission. His love for Israel and for the soldiers of the IDF isn’t something he puts on display for show. It’s something he lives every day. Helping Israel Fund’s motto, “Never let them walk alone,” isn’t a catchphrase. It’s a principle. From opening Pinah Chamas (warm corners) across Israel to give soldiers a place to rest, eat, and recharge, to quietly supporting thousands of troops through everyday needs, Glen has built something special: a community of support that stretches across oceans.

After I moved to Israel in 2020, I didn’t hear much from Glen or the organization. But when the war broke out on October 7, everything changed. Glen and the Helping Israel Fund activated like another battalion. From the second the attacks began, they were raising funds, securing non-military gear, identifying critical needs on the ground, and rallying people across America to support the soldiers defending our homeland.

With two sons-in-law serving in elite counterterrorism units, Glen wasn’t watching this war from the sidelines. He and his family were living it. And even in the chaos, he coordinated supply deliveries, organized barbecues on remote bases to lift spirits, and made countless late-night drop-offs with no fanfare. He was where the IDF needed him. On the ground, in the shadows, filling the gaps no one else saw.
At Smiles for the Kids, we’ve had the privilege of working closely with Glen and Helping Israel Fund throughout this war. We’ve witnessed the quiet acts of chessed that never make headlines but change lives. The smiles, the meals, the hugs, the emotional support. These things matter. And they come from a uniquely American Israeli partnership built not just on political alliances but on values: compassion, action, and love of country.
This July 4, as fireworks light the skies above America, let’s remember that freedom is never free. Let’s honor those who protect it. Whether in uniform in the United States or in the olive green of the IDF. Let’s celebrate the people like Glen Golish who ensure that, even in the darkest times, no soldier walks alone.
Because when America and Israel stand together, hope stands tall.
Happy Independence Day.
Am Yisrael Chai.
